What you command

One scenario, playable from either side. Every battle runs five minutes on the clock against a Green, Regular or Veteran enemy: the attacker has to break the line before nightfall, the defender has to hold.

As the Union, hold Bald Hill and the railroad line until the attack is spent. Logan's XV Corps stands astride the Georgia Railroad with De Gress's battery at the Hurt house, Blair's XVII Corps, Leggett's and Giles Smith's divisions, holds Bald Hill, and Dodge's XVI Corps has just marched in behind the left. Hardee's whole corps is coming in from behind. Turn your lines to face it.

As the Confederacy, roll up the Union flank and take Bald Hill and the Hurt house guns. Hardee's corps comes out of the woods into the Union rear: Cleburne's division, with Granbury's Texans, Govan and Lowrey, and Maney's, Walker's and Bate's divisions. When the Federals turn to meet him, Cheatham's corps strikes from the city works along the railroad, with the Georgia Militia behind.

The battle

In July 1864 Jefferson Davis replaced Joseph E. Johnston with John Bell Hood, who was expected to fight for Atlanta. Two days after his attack at Peachtree Creek failed, Hood sent William J. Hardee's corps on an all-night march around the Union left, east of the city, against James B. McPherson's Army of the Tennessee.

Hardee's attack did not find an empty flank. Dodge's XVI Corps had halted exactly where Bate and Walker came out of the woods, and threw them back; General W. H. T. Walker was killed. Riding through the gap, McPherson met Cleburne's skirmishers and was shot from his horse. Cleburne and Maney swept into the rear of the XVII Corps, whose men jumped from one side of their works to the other and held Bald Hill. In the afternoon Cheatham broke the line at the railroad cut and took De Gress's battery, until John A. Logan, now commanding the army, led the counterattack that won it back.

Union losses were about 3,700, Confederate about 5,500. Atlanta fell five weeks later, and the news helped re-elect Lincoln that November. The fight at the Hurt house is the scene of the Atlanta Cyclorama painting.
